The Orchestra Italiana del Cinema (OIC) is the first Italian symphonic ensemble dedicated to the interpretation and performance of film music. The Orchestra Italiana del Cinema is formed by young talents and seasoned professional players from the best Italian orchestras.
The Orchestra was born inside Forum Music Village, the historic recording studios founded in the late 1960’s by four encyclopaedic figures as Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, Armando Trovajoli, and Luis Bacalov.
The mission of this ambitious project, strongly wanted by the OIC’s President Marco Patrignani, is to promote and perform the extraordinary original soundtrack heritage, researching, recovering, and restoring film music masterworks’ scores, through the support of Associations, Foundations, private and public Libraries.
The Orchestra Italiana del Cinema is quickly becoming one of the most interesting new orchestral project on national and international musical scene. It’s working on a wide repertoire of film scores, with particular attention to the Italian historical one; many unpublished and/or unrecorded scores were recovered in a short period thanks to the extraordinary work carried out by excellent music transcribers.
OIC’s project is supported by all the most important Italian institutions, as the President of the Italian Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Economic Development and prestigious foundations like Federico Fellini Foundation, Cinecittà Luce and the Experimental Centre of Cinematography of the Italian National Film Library.
OIC’s debut took place June 21th 2010 at Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, with an extraordinary multimedia concert, titled The Sound of Neorealism, conducted by Daniele Belardinelli.
Some of the most significant musical works from the Italian Neorealist cinema were performed after a great work of transcription: Ladri di Biciclette, Miracolo a Milano, Riso Amaro, Sciuscià, Umberto D.
In April 2011, the O.I.C. made its international debut, performing at the first edition of the Beijing International Film Festival in China.
OIC played at the Festival opening night in the National Centre for the Performing Arts and made two concerts inside the Great Hall of the People, with the Italian Academy Award winner composer Nicola Piovani as guest director and the Israeli singer Noa as special guest.
The concert has been broadcasted by the CCTV (China Central Television) with an audience of 100 milion people.
OIC met a huge success with the multimedia concert Gold Rush by Charlie Chaplin, directed by Timothy Brock, a famous musicologist, composer and director specialized in Chaplin’s score.
The Orchestra performed at the “Auditorium Parco della Musica” in Rome, presenting a fascinating concert programme with music by Piero Piccioni on occasion of the prestigious event dedicated to the memory of the legendary Italian actor, Alberto Sordi.
In June 2012, on the occasion of the Queen’s Birthday Party organized by the British in Embassy in Rome to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Orchestra Italiana del Cinema performed a symphonic multimedia concert at Villa Wolkonsky, the private residence of the British Ambassador in Rome, offering a unique and meaningful moment of cultural exchange between Italy and the United Kingdom.

In the occasion, the Orchestra got a great success, conducted by Ernst van Tiel and joined at the piano by the Academy Award composer Ludovic Bource.
In close collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Orchestra has promoted the “ Year of Italian Culture in the USA 2013 “ by performing and recording the official anthem of the year, composed for the occasion by Maestro Nicola Piovani. The composition was presented for the first time during the inauguration ceremony of the Year of Italian Culture, on 12 December 2012 in Washington DC.
The Orchestra plays a principal role in the official video for the promotion of the Year of Italian Culture in the USA, created with the collaboration of the Italian National Tourism Board (ENIT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
